Fab Lab Cartesio

Design and implementation of a school-based laboratory compliant with the international standards of the Fab Foundation in Boston, commissioned by a major training institute and career-orientation center in Rome.

Project summary

The national training body ANAPIA, accredited across several Italian regions and operating a number of state-recognised schools, commissioned Chirale in autumn 2016 to build a school-based Fab Lab inside the Liceo Scientifico Cartesio in the Laurentino district of Rome.

The lab supports the high school’s educational activities in line with the goals of Italy’s National Digital School Plan, and is also designed to provide services to the surrounding area by opening to the public and running adult-training programmes.

The Fab Lab Cartesio was implemented along the lines of the Creative Workshops developed within the Roma Makers network.

The lab’s configuration is predominantly oriented to educational use, with four cartesian 3D printers, a CNC cutting plotter and an electronics workbench equipped with Arduino and Raspberry Pi kits; to better support the local maker community a 60 W CO2 laser cutter was also installed.
