Accreditation
Using the machines requires an initial accreditation phase. Operational skills can be gained through our courses or demonstrated through prior experience, with the support of our technical staff.
Four areas of work: our labs, university research, artistic collaborations, regional and European networks.
Chirale labs are workspaces dedicated to the development and execution of projects, built on the integration of digital fabrication, electronics, programming and material processing.
first nucleus of the Chirale labs, on two floors facing the street through two large windows. The upper floor is dedicated to study and the restitution of processes; the basement hosts operational activities: an analogue darkroom, an e-textiles lab, fine art printing, chemical experimentation, electronics and a library.
a place where research, training and production are not separate but made visible. The windows expose the work in progress, making the passage between inside and outside continuous.
embedded in the Garbatella fabric, the space keeps continuity with the neighbourhood: not as a standalone destination, but as a presence integrated into the daily life of the street.
third lab in the Chirale system, located in the historic premises that for over fifty years hosted a neighbourhood toy shop (Il Piccolo Bazar), part of Garbatella's daily memory. It hosts digital fabrication machines and production work.
a place where digital technologies and manual practices operate together: project execution happens through the interaction of machine and operator.
an intermediate element between Spazio and Punto, both operationally and spatially. The transformation of the premises retains a trace of its original function, translated into a new form of productive activity.
second lab in the Chirale system, opened on the same street to host technologies and processes incompatible with Spazio Chirale.
with the opening of Punto, the system explicitly distinguishes activities: research and training stay at Spazio, commission production, prototyping and industrial scale move to Punto.
the name marks a threshold: the minimum, necessary place where a project is translated into a production process.
The digital fabrication machines in our labs are available to companies, professionals, artisans, artists and hobbyists who want to develop prototypes, produce small batches or carry out projects autonomously.
Access to the labs goes through a process of accreditation and technical onboarding, aimed at the safe and aware use of the machines.
Using the machines requires an initial accreditation phase. Operational skills can be gained through our courses or demonstrated through prior experience, with the support of our technical staff.
To request a machine booking, simply send an email indicating the machine of interest and the period needed. The request will be forwarded to our staff who will arrange to accept it.
Access to lab services uses the Service Card, Chirale's prepaid system. Credit bundles unlock discounted rates. Card and top-ups are available at the lab or on the online shop.
We design and build digital fabrication labs inside Italian public schools. Three of our projects are studied by Indire as national models for the integration between school and territory.
Municipalities, public companies, territorial bodies and Third Sector organisations entrust us with the design of labs open to their communities: places where citizens, makers, students, businesses and associations access digital fabrication technologies and prototyping services.
On behalf of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), we brought our model of training and technological consulting to Lebanon, in support of the country's innovative SMEs.
We work with universities and research bodies through agreements, funded projects and industrial PhDs. We provide technical consulting, prototypes, and make our lab technologies available to academic experimentation.
We make contemporary artworks on commission for artists, galleries and institutions, accompanying the process that brings a work from the artist's idea to its physical existence. We translate the artist's idea into technical solutions, materials and processes, developing executive design, digital fabrication, electronics, software and integration up to final installation. The lab acts as a technical structure supporting artistic practice, for projects that demand advanced skills and technologies. Works made in our labs have entered Italian public collections, including the Collezione Farnesina, the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna and the MAXXI.
Art residencies are programmes supported by Chirale that offer artists time, space and access to the labs to develop their research. Unlike production work, they are not necessarily oriented to an immediate result, but to the possibility of experimenting, deepening and building new directions of work.
Chirale labs are crossed by informal groups, collectives and independent realities that use the spaces for workshops, meetings, presentations and events.
The activities we host transform continuously together with the people who build them.
If you are part of a group or a reality looking for a place to develop shared activities, you can pitch us your idea.
