Quantum computers are considered the next frontier in the field of automatic computing.
The future Error-free Universal Quantum Computers will make it possible to solve in a matter of hours problems that with current technologies are impossible to solve, since they would require computation times longer than the age of the universe — even for the most powerful supercomputers available.
While waiting for this fifth generation of machines, which will not arrive before 10 or 20 years, the market entry of an intermediate generation of systems called NISQ — Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum Computer — is imminent.
The first specimens are already in operation and will soon be used to dramatically accelerate processing tasks today addressed with heuristic and approximate methods.
The impact will be huge, and since these are logical architectures completely different from the classical computers we all know, the new technology will have significant entry barriers — due to the “steepness” of the learning curve and the scarcity of technicians trained in quantum computing.
